Outdoor Recreation

In recent years, Ogden has received national recognition as an outdoor recreation mecca, attracting outdoor companies and visitors alike. The Wall Street Journal has named Ogden “the center of outdoor sports gear in the U.S.,” while Outside Magazine recognized it as one of the “Best Towns in America” and National Geographic ranked it as a “Top 10 Emerging Ski Town.” Ogden is an ideal location for outdoor companies because of its strong industry cluster, great proximity to recreation opportunities, and a growing number of major outdoor events.

Jobs in the industry range from product design and engineering, to production and distribution, to financial, sales, and customer service functions. The strong industry cluster contributes to a well-qualified labor force and creates a robust supply chain network and business opportunities. Outdoor recreation companies in Ogden have also spurred innovation targeted to that industry, for example, with the use of composite materials.

Access to the Outdoors

Ogden is known for its incredible access to outdoor recreation, right in its backyard. Ogden is nestled against the mountains of the Wasatch Front, forming a scenic backdrop for the city.

An extensive system of biking and hiking trails is easily accessed from Ogden’s East Bench – just 10 minutes from downtown. The mountain trails are connected to the city by numerous trailheads and the Ogden River Parkway, a paved, multi-modal trail along the Ogden River. The Ogden River itself offers blue-ribbon certified fishing and a challenging kayak park. The nearby mountains provide additional recreation opportunities: world-class ski resorts (including Snowbasin and Powder Mountain), Pineview Reservoir, and hiking, biking, climbing, camping, boating, and fishing. Virtually no other metropolitan area can boast such immediate access to 230 miles of maintained trails, 13,000 acres of freshwater and over 170,000 acres of National Forest land.

Ogden’s unparalleled access to the outdoors helps companies to recruit top-notch employees, test their products on the local trails or slopes, and host successful outdoor events.

Ogden regularly hosts major outdoor recreation events, including the XTERRA national championships (trail running and triathlon), Tour of Utah, Ogden Marathon, Scenic Tour of Utah, Quality Bicycle Products’ Fat Bike Summit and dealer camp, Cannondale’s global sales/dealer event, and numerous bicycle and running races. In 2012, outdoor recreation events in Ogden attracted more than 26,000 participants and 60,000 spectators.

These events create an opportunity for outdoor companies to reach a large number of potential customers, network with industry partners, and align with Ogden’s nationally recognized outdoor brand. For example, the 2013 Scenic Tour of Utah brought high-level executives of Asian bicycle companies to Ogden and introduced them to members of the local bike industry during a unique scenic ride and other social activities. The event and local industry members received extensive publicity in major industry publications in both Asia and the U.S.
